Ko Olina Sunset

I'm not a huge fan of the manufactured "too perfect" beaches at Ko Olina, especially when the entire leeward coast is only a few miles further along the highway, but this sunset was... spectacular.

I agree with you on the beauty of Leeward coast beaches. However, personal safety and security is an unfortunate issue with the public beaches and parks there.

Matt, compared to so many other places across the country, violent crime is still far below average, leeward side included. The best stat I found was from seven years ago, "Hawaii's violent-crime rate was less than half the national average and ranked 43rd in the nation, according to FBI figures."

Having said that, it pays to be aware of your surroundings. I've never had problems, but I blame that on a combination of hanging with the right people, being smart and having good luck. No one wants to be the next statistic.

Thanks for commenting, and for the reminder that it's important to be aware, even in "paradise."
