Toddler Tastes

bob the builder

Last year it was a three-dimensional truck; this year, a simpler homage to Bob the Builder. Being the father of a preschooler has now reduced us to baking cakes in the shapes of cartoon characters. Take two stacked chocolate rounds with cupcake halves for ears and decorate with a tinted sour cream frosting. Easy as pie.

Happy Birthday, Toshi!

Hey Alan,

This looks like a great cake. You've done a wonderful job with the frosting. I would have made a mess!

Reid, to be honest, my wife gets most of the credit for the fine appearance. It was a collaborative effort which mostly involved her holding the spatula and me offering unwanted pointers.

I love the Bob the Builder cake and would like to make it for my son's 3rd birthday. Can I have your sour cream frosting recipe and tell me what colors/tints you used for the hat, hair, and skin? Also, what size pan did you use for the face? Thank you so much!

Erin, sadly I no longer remember what I used for the sour cream frosting recipe. I probably googled around and grabbed one that looked reliable. The cake pans were standard 9" rounds.

The tint was purely trial and error. I picked up one of those little food color variety packs you can find in any grocery store with the red, blue green and yellow. From there, we just combined colors to get the desired effect.

I hope that helps!
