Whole Foods coming to Oahu

That's right, after several years of rumors, Whole Foods is officially coming to Hawaii. Whatever gripes people may have about their prices, they have a reputation for being an employee-friendly company and they'll be able to scratch an organic food itch that so far has been underserved in Hawaii. Don't get too excited though-- their new Ward Village Shops location isn't scheduled to open until 2008.

although i am a whole foods consumer when i'm on the mainland, i do understand that there is quite a bit of strife within the ranks, and while i understand the company stance, i don't necessarily agree with all of it. i also find it amusing that many shoppers automatically assume that everything WF sells is organic or is "healthy" or "good for you". i agree that organic foods may be underserved in all the islands, but the price one has to pay for them (at WF or not) will always be a point of contention--people may agree in theory that organic is the way to go, but if it means a significant increase in the weekly food budget, they might not put that theory into practice.

also, i find it bemusing that the security guards in one of my neighbourhood WFs in los angeles are the only pistol packin' private force in the area....

Santos, that's an interesting link you've shared. I hadn't heard that before, but I'm not surprised either. No corporation is perfect, even the ones that are heading in general directions I like.

The "whole paycheck" problem is the most frequent complaint I hear about WF. I'm of the belief that a significant part of that problem (not *all* of it though) is an economy of scale. As more and more people prefer organic products, the size of production and methods of delivery could allow for lower costs. I'm not holding my breath yet.

Thank you for your insights!
