Taro fields in Hanalei
Even with production in decline, Hawaiian farms produce an average of 5.6 million pounds of taro a year, the majority of which is milled for poi. That's an official USDA statistic, but I only tracked it down so I'd have a food-related excuse to share a photo of one of the most beautiful valleys in Hawai`i.

YeaH! Lovely Hanalei and there ain't nothin' like fish n' poi!
Alan don't quote me on this but I believe that taro may be a crop grown in Greece or Crete or somewheres around there. I came across a Cypriot recipe that called for taro and I was like, ????! I'm trying to track down a supplier here to see if I can get some. Should be interesting to see if it's anything like the ones grown in Hawaii.
Rowena- I knew taro was common throughout the Pacific and parts of Asia, but I've never heard of it in Europe. (On the other hand, I'm fairly ignorant of most things European.) Good luck finding a local supply!
