Koa Pancake House, Aiea
Walking into Koa Pancake House, I had the sense that we were going to like this place. The counter had lines four people deep, placing their orders, and every table was occupied with a mix of old couples, young families with kids and surfers grabbing a bite on their way back from shore. That particular combination of patrons usually leads to the same conclusion: hearty portions of good food at afforable prices.
My son and I split an order of mahimahi and eggs ($5.25) and almost couldn't finish. The mahimahi had been sauteed, but wasn't oily. A quick squeeze of lemon brought out the freshness of the fish. In addition to eggs, breakfast included a side of three fluffy pancakes, cooked to a perfect golden brown. The guava juice ($1.40) was standard, but the coffee ($1.70) was just good enough to be drinkable. I had been seeking a light but filling breakfast--no loco moco today--and this fit the bill perfectly.
As we were sharing our breakfast, I was struck by how comfortable everything was. Even on a busy Saturday morning, it wasn't chaotic. The warm koa walls and high ceiling suck up sound, creating and easy space to talk and grind. We liked it.

Hi Alan,
As I mentioned to James, I haven't been here in ages...thanks for the reminder! *sigh*
Reid- Aiea is far enough away for me that I only go to Koa when I have some other reason I need to head that direction in the morning. Otherwise it seems so far... a whole seven miles! It's funny how that wouldn't have seemed far at all before I moved here.
Just did take out this Sunday morning. A wise move, as there was quite a line to order. They bring take out to an entire new realm. I especially like how they'll put the whipped cream in a separate, sealed cup - but not until you step up to the counter. Nice touch & great omelets as well (the special has never disappointed). One meal is enough for two!

I didn't know about the whipped cream in a diff cup. What a great idea. It's those little details that elevate them above greasy spoon status.
